Something fairly amazing happened yesterday at Blanding Elementary School. Mrs. Tina Crofts and her fourth grade students spent time in the morning learning about the water cycle. (At this point you are probably thinking “Well, that sounds like a pretty typical topic for an elementary science class...” but keep reading because what they were learning about isn’t nearly as amazing as where they were learning about it.)   Mrs. Crofts and her class took a field trip as part of their study on the water cycle. So where did they go? They went to the Texas State Aqua …

At the May 14, 2013 San Juan School District Board Meeting, retirees for the 2012-13 school year were recognized, and personally thanked for their many years of service with the district. Each retiree was presented a nice bag with the district logo, and a pot with an artist’s depiction of the geographic area he/she worked in. The district has fourteen retirees this year (11 Certified and 3 Classified), and seven of those were able to attend this meeting. Combined, our retirees have an amazing 400+ years of service with the district. Superintendent Doug Wright expressed his hea …

We had 65 people respond and students and parents provided the greatest number of feedback. This brief post will summarize the findings of the survey and will address some of the feedback regarding what people said in regards to the functionality they would want a mobile site to provide. (The images summarizing the data also include the item participants were asked to respond to.) Audience Information (way to lead out, students...): Measuring Importance: …

Text Message Survey Results
Hey everyone--I appreciate those that took a couple of minutes to give some input and voice to our questions about the text messaging communication/alert service the educational technology folks are looking at from Celly. 32 people participated and the purpose of this post is to simply share the results of those individuals. (I have never been much of a mathematician but I know that many of the graphs below do not add up to 32 and for those of you that may be wondering why it is simply because most of the questions in the survey gave the user the option to select more than one choice...) …

San Juan School District's New Site Released
Something big happened in San Juan School District today and if you are reading this post then you already know. The new and improved online face of San Juan School District went live after we decided last May that the two (yes, two) current sites were not meeting the needs of all of our stakeholders (and the the look and feel of these sites just didn't seem to mesh well with the typical end-user).  After the educational technology department was given the task of letting go of the old and creating the new we immediately began an intensive online search looking at the bits …

On Tuesday, May 15, 2012, the Board of Education for San Juan School District honored 11 staff members who will soon retire at the end of the 2011-12 school year.   Combined, these talented staff members provided over 275 years of service to the students and staff of San Juan School District. That is a difficult number to quantify especially when one attempts to connect this amount of service to the number of lives that were positively affected.   The 11 staff members who will retire are listed here (along with their final area of di …

2012 Regional Spelling Bee Winners
The San Juan School District was once again very well represented at the 2012 Southeast Educational Service Center Region Spelling Bee.  Jared Ward, last years' winner was able to outlast Monticello High School's Nathalie Reay for first place and repeat as the champion. Noah Kemner from ARL was the other student who represented the San Juan School District and he finished a respectable 4th place.  Jared will be heading to Washington D.C. for his second opportunity to participate in the Scripp's National Spelling Bee.  Jared won both the San Juan School Dis …
