Tuesday Morning Schedule
- 12/6/11
In an effort to better clarifiy and communicate the purpose of the Tuesday morning schedule adjustment that was implemented this school year, please view the video below and read the information below--thank you.
Tuesday Morning Schedule Change
Attention parents, new to the 2011-12 school year, all San Juan School District schools will have a late start for students on Tuesday morning; schools will start instruction for students at 8:30 AM on Tuesday morning. Details about bus times and suggested student arrival time on Tuesday morning will be communicated to parents from individual schools since each community might differ slightly.
Reason for Tuesday Morning Change
This time carved out on Tuesday morning will be used by teachers to meet together in a structured collaborative manner where teachers focus on four main questions in established professional learning communities (PLCs):
1: What do we guarantee our students will learn?
2: How will we know they have learned it?
3: What will we do for those who do not learn it the first time?
4: What we will do for those who do learn it?
Answering these questions takes teachers deeply into critical areas of curriculum, assessment, intervention, extension, and best teaching practices. Establishing collaboratives teams of teachers is shown to be the most effective method for increasing student achievement and all schools in San Juan School District are pushing to integrate the PLC process for that very purpose.
San Juan Schools and PLCs
This structured PLC process to shift the focus from teaching to learning is a common thread in schools and districts across America being recognized for leading the educational reform movement. San Juan School District is committed to its journey of re-culturing all schools to be successful in forming and sustaining high level functioning PLC teacher-teams.
Another change to help support principals and teachers with this new PLC focus is a change from seven periods during the day to an eight period day in all secondary high schools. This extra period will allow for more flexibility in scheduling intervention and extension curriculum needs for students.
Valued Parental Involvement
As always, parents are encouraged and welcome to visit with their child’s school administrator or counselor to get answers to questions or concerns regarding these changes.
